Ways to Celebrate National Book Month

Prepared by Adriene S. Jones

Sometimes reading seems like drudgery when it’s always connected to schoolwork.  Well, you may still have to read the pages assigned by your English teacher, but during the month of October, celebrating National Book Month could make reading more exciting.  Check out these fun ways to celebrate:

·         Donate a book and get a free cookie from the Great American Cookie Company.  Click here for details.

·         Discover E-books.  Click here to access Delgado’s E-book collection.  If prompted for a user name and password, enter the username and password for your Delgado email account.

·         Attend story time at your local public library.  Click on the links below to see story time schedules for nearby public libraries.
o   St. Tammany Parish (Covington, Slidell)
o   New Orleans (City Park, West Bank)
o   Additional library schedules for the Jefferson Public Library system

·         Catch up on your reading list or start a new one.  Click here to get started with this year’s National Book Foundation finalists.

·         Read a book then watch the movie.  There are many great movies that are even better books: The Hunger Games, Harry Potter Series, The Secret Life of Bees, Lord of the Rings, The Lord of the Rings, The Help, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Little Women.

·         Download the Reading Rainbow iPad App for free or watch clips of the television show Reading Rainbow on YouTube.

·         Visit the DCC Covington Library and participate in the National Book Month Celebration Contest.

However you decide to spend National Book Month, hold on to the books that make you think, question, explore, cry, and laugh because they are worth celebrating.
