One of our librarians had the pleasure to present research at the 8th annual Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries International Conference in London this May.

Special topics included: 

• Library Worldviews, Designs, and Methods

• Information Sharing and the Social Impact

Some Helpful Hints when Researching:
1. Your problem is not as unique as you think.
2. You have more data than you think.
3. You need less data than you think.
4. More useful methods are more simpler than you think.


 Janine Smith, librarian over the Sidney Collier site, presented research relating to her Native American heritage and tribal college library websites.

What she took away from the conference were two important concepts that apply to all producing any type of research whether it is a simple essay or forty-page bibliometric study.

1. Tell the story behind the data. This will help your readers connect to your research.

2. Save the time of the reader. You should consider what is most important for the reader to know and why should they care.

LIBRARIES TRANSFORM! National Library Week April 10-16, 2016

National Library Week (April  10 - 16, 2016) is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for 2016 National Library Week is "Libraries Transform."

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.

Delgado Community College Libraries Transform!

Library Student Services

• Circulation: Borrowers are limited to five items per subject at time of checkout with a maximum of 15 books. 
• Books: Two weeks with two renewals providing there is no hold request on the item.
• Circulating Videos:  (All Campuses) Two weeks (Slidell) One day. 
• Reserved Materials: One or two hours OR one or two days as designated by the instructor.  (Reserve materials are located at the Circulation Desk.)
• Reserve Items: Reserve materials (books, articles, videos etc.) have been set aside at the library by faculty members for use by the students of Delgado Community College. The materials are owned by the faculty member who placed them on reserve or the library. These are high-use materials with a shorter loan period to accommodate the demand.
• Reference:  Users may request reference assistance by calling the Reference Office on your campus/site:

  Reference questions may also be submitted via the web by using the Ask A Reference Question form. A response will be emailed within 24-32 hours.
• ILLiad (ILL Electronic Request Management System): In order to request materials through interlibrary loan, all users must register through ILLiad, the interlibrary loan system. After registering, users can request interlibrary loan materials through ILLiad, check the status of their requests, and view a history of requests submitted through ILLiad.
• Printing: Printing is available from the Library computer labs with the use of a Delgado I.D. card. Black & White prints are 5 cents per page.
• eReaders: The eReaders will be pre-loaded with your selection of titles. eReaders can be checked out at the Delgado Community College Libraries Circulation desk.
  In order to check out an eReader, Patrons must present a valid Driver’s License and a current DCC ID. Users must be in good standing with the library.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Did your New Year’s resolutions fizzle out like New Year's Eve fireworks? Do you find yourself frustrated that there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything on your to-do list? Are you crunched for time when an important deadline is looming? 

To stay on track, maybe some reflection is in order. What exactly is your plan?

Perhaps you should try setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.

S.M.A.R.T. goals criteria:

·         Specific—This can be a broad statement of your ultimate goal. What is it you are hoping to achieve? For example, “Start a career in Business Management.”

·         Measureable—Your goal should have quantifiable steps that indicate progress, such as “Complete my Associate’s degree by 2016.”

·         Attainable—This criterion answers the question “How?” Is this goal realistic and achievable given your resources?

·         Relevant—Make sure your goal is worthwhile and rewarding.

·         Time-bound—Set target dates for every step in achieving your goal.

S.M.A.R.T. goals help you to stay focused on your efforts and help you plan your activities to aim for outcomes, not individual tasks. Making them measurable helps you stay on track and meet your target dates and benchmarks. You should evaluate your progress periodically and adjust as necessary.

The Charity School of Nursing (CSN) Library supports the student and faculty on the Charity Campus. The library is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and is located on the third floor of CSN Campus. (504) 671-1274.

MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities.

Where can I get help using MLA Citation Style?

Delgado Library has several sources to provide students with help using MLA citation styles. The following are some options students can use.

Reference Books
These books are located at City Park campus Library presently located in Building ten, in the Reference Room. These books are non-circulating, which means they can only be used in the Reference Room. Write on Math: Taking Better Notes in Math Class (E-Book)

Write On! Math is an e-book that offers specific strategies and projects designed to keep students engaged during math class, strengthen their mathematics, and teach technical writing skills. This e-book also helps students learn how to take better notes in math class.

Real Life Teens: Preparing for College (Video)

Real Life Teens is a 19 minute video, designed to help teens prepare for college success. Subjects include ways to prepare for college; the importance of graduating from high school, SATs and their importance, the importance of choosing the right college, developing good study habits, where to ask for college preparation and future careers. A viewable/printable instructor's guide is available online. 

Effective Study Skills (Video)

Effective Study Skills is a 30 minute video  that helps students learn how to achieve academic success by learning study behaviors that lead to high achievement. This video gives specific suggestions in the areas of listening, note-taking and outlining and effective time management. Emphasis is placed on preparing for classes, paying attention and developing a positive attitude. 

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

October 12-16, 2015 – Connected Communities: Staying Protected While Always Connected

This month emphasizes the importance of protecting ourselves when connecting to the Internet while on the go. Students, Staff and Faculty need to be aware when using mobile devices and social media. Delgado Community College library encourages everyone to become better digital citizens in our communities.

As a student, you are more than accustomed to using the Internet in your everyday life, but the risks that come with that use could greatly impact you and your future.

 DID YOU KNOW? 

• 95 percent of teens use the Internet.

• 77 percent of teens use Facebook. 

• 53 percent of teens use Instagram. 

• 24 percent of teens use Twitter. 

• 10 percent of teens use Tumblr. 

• The average teen has approximately 300 friends on Facebook and 79 followers on Twitter.  

• Among Twitter users aged 12 to 17, 64 percent made their tweets public. 

• 19 percent of teen users have posted things they regret, including photos, videos, status updates, tweets, or comments. 

• Only 18 percent of young adults claim they are comfortable with what their friends post about them online, and 32 percent say that the information about them online is what they choose for the public to see.

BEWARE OF WHAT YOU POST ONLINE 

No matter what social media platform you use, consider the type of information you choose to share with others. Here are the common cyber risks you may face when using social media: 

• Sharing sensitive information. Sensitive information includes anything that can help a person steal your identity or find you, such as your full name, Social Security number, address, birth date, phone number, or where you were born. 

• Posting questionable content. Remember future employers may look at your social media accounts before hiring you. Questionable content can include pictures, videos, or opinions that may you seem unprofessional or mean and can damage your reputation or future prospects. 

• Tracking your location. Many social media platforms allow you to check in and broadcast your location, or automatically adds your location to photos and posts.

Delgado Holds Ribbon-Cutting for Marvin E. Thames Sr. Learning Resources Center

On Friday, September 18, Delgado Community College held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Marvin E. Thames Sr. Learning Resources Center at the Delgado City Park Campus. The new facility will house the Delgado Library, Office of Distance Learning, and the Adult Education Departments.

Cengage Learning's Career Transitions database, available from the DCC Library's databases page, can walk you through the entire job-seeking process. If you're off campus, a window will prompt you to sign in with your LOLA log-in information to access library databases.
